Generation #7 - Jesse Wheeler and Sarah Oslin

Frances Scoggins Wheeler's book "The Wheeler's of Granville County North Carolina.  Their Decendants and Antecendants" is where most of the accounts to this point have taken place. (wonderful book with lots of great info) Dealing with information this far back is sketchy and difficult. We must try to piece together information  of children and families prior to 1850 by ages and genders, proximity to where they live and future census records showing where they were born.  Wills and Estate papers also help. But when there are none we must make logical assumptions.  And later, we may find more evidence either solidifying what we have found or disproving it.

The children that most folks list as Jesse Wheeler and Sarah Oslin were were included due to "circumstantial" evidence of the time (which is how lots of us come to our conclusions and must be relied upon to some extent)  However, recently, I have been able to conclude that Jesse M. Wheeler born in TN about 1822 is not the child of Jesse Wheeler and Sarah Oslin. He just happens to be living near them on an 1860 census. Also beyond a shadow of a doubt William B. Wheeler born 1822  is the son of Henry Wheeler and Cecelia B Wheeler (cousin to Jesse Wheeler).  We have also been able to then add our Great Great Grandfather George W. Wheeler to the children of Jesse Wheeler and Sarah Oslin. This is in part due to the naming of his children, the fact that he was born in North Carolina, his second wife lives next door to Jesse Wheeler and Sarah Oslin on census records, sons David Potter Wheeler & James T Wheeler name son's George.   George Washington Wheeler Sr. leaves James Gideon Wheeler age 5 entrusted to his brother James T Wheeler on the 1850 census after his first wife dies.  Finally, James T Wheeler has a grandson "Cleo Wheeler" who is born with the same syndactaly of his hands that afflicts George Washington Wheeler Jr and subsequently his Great Grand children. Not to mention that my DNA profile is matching with with at least 2 "4th Cousin" relations who decend from Jesse Wheeler and Sarah Oslin.  I have studied this to no end and have come to the final conclusion that George Washington Wheeler Sr. belongs to Jesse Wheeler and Sarah Oslin.

Here is a breakdown of the 1820 Census of Jesse Wheeler And Sarah Oslin in North Carolina:

And Finally the 1840 Bedford TN Census Breakdown of Jesse Wheeler and Sarah Oslin:

1. The 1840 census has  several children who do not belong. A male age 15-19 that is not on 1820 or 1830 census. A male 20-29 who is not on any prior census a female age 5-9 who is not on any future census. These must be some relations maybe visiting? We'll probably never know. I also wonder if Kesia belongs to Jesse and Sarah.  I know she shows up on the 1850 census with Jesse, little Sarah and Lucy, BUT she is not given the "gifts" that Martha Bugg gives to Lucy, Sarah and Edy in 1943? We know she is living because she is on the 1850 census with Jesse.  Another mystery. Also, there may be another child of Jesse and Sarah's in that 5-9 female age range that maybe doesn't survive to the 1850 census?? Lots of questions that may never be answered.
2. Wiley Wheeler is living in Cook County TN on the 1840 census with unknown 1st wife. I believe Wiley may belong to Henry and Cecelia Wheeler OR his 1st wife is their dtr as he has 2 children living with Henry and Cecilia on the 1850 census, that are named similar to Henry and Cecilia (William Henry and Cecelia)

The children that Frances Scoggins Wheeler had outlined for Jesse Wheeler were mostly correct.  Except for these:
1. William B. Wheeler born 1821 did not belong (his parents are Henry and Cecelia Wheeler) so I have removed him.
2. Also Wiley clearly does not belong because he is not on any census record AND he married Millie who must be the dtr of Jesse and Sarah
3. Additionally, Jesse M. Wheeler born 1821 does not belong as he was born in TN.  Jesse and Sarah Wheeler were living in NC in 1821 and other information points him in the direction of a family of South Carolina Wheelers who were in TN at that time. He is definitely not the child of Sarah and Jesse.

Jesse Wheeler 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 (Benjamin , William , Martin , John , John , Henry ) was born about 1792 in Granville Co., North Carolina. He died before 1860 in Bedford Co., Tennessee. Jesse was counted in a census 7 in 1820 in Granville Co., North Carolina. He was counted in a census 8 in 1830 in Granville Co., North Carolina. He was counted in a census 9 in 1840 in Bedford Co., Tennessee. He was counted in a census 10 in 1850 in Limestone Co., Alabama. He married, Sarah (Sallie) Oslin born about 1791 in Virginia to Samuel Benjamin Oslin and Martha Bugg, August 3 1813 Granville County N.C.
The bondsman for their marriage was Moses Jones. It is not known when Jesse died but it was before the 1860 census was taken. The 1850 census shows Jesse alone with his two young daughters.
At the Nov session of the Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions, 7 Nov 1820, Jesse & Sally Wheeler were witnesses in the case Seth Perkinson vs John Obrion. There was no indication as to what the suit was about. Then, on the 11th of Sept 1823, Jesse Wheeler was named as trustee of the property of a John Stephenson. John Stephenson owed money to a William Stephenson and if John didn't pay the debt, which was overdue, by Nov 1823, Jesse Wheeler was to sell all of the property of John Stephenson and pay the debt. The two witnesses to the transaction were Wiley Wheeler and Henry Wheeler.
The 1820 census of Granville Co., N.C. listed Jesse Wheeler on pg. 30. He was also on pg. 50 of the 1830 Granville Co. census. He was in Bedford Co., Tenn. by Dec 1830 as he was shown as a chain carrier on a land transaction. One Anderson Hall was entering land on the Big Harpeth River "bounded by Lawson Oslin." Another deed in 1836 mentioned him as an adjoining landowner "on the waters of Wilsons Creek. By the time the 1840 census was taken he was living in Bedford Co., Tenn., with a wife and eleven others in the household.
In a "Deed of Gift", written 25 Nov 1843 and recorded 9 Jan 1844, Martha (Bugg) Oslin, "for love and affection", gave the following gifts to her granddaughters: Eady Augustine Wheeler, a cow & calf, Lucy Engline Wheeler, a cow & calf, and to Sarah B. Frances Wheeler, one heifer.
Jesse Wheeler acquired 68 acres of land in District 10 of Bedford Co., Tenn. from Richard G. Jackson by a quit claim deed. He used this property in a "deed of trust" to a Willie Perry on 20 Nov 1843 in the same situation as mentioned above. He stated that he owed his kinsman, R.F.P. Jones, $286. He apparently paid the debt by its due date of 1 May 1844 because on 13 Feb 1846, he sold the same piece of property for $300.
The 1840 census showed the makeup of Jesse's family as: Males/ 1 @ 10-15; 3 @ 15-20; 1 @ 20-30; and 1 @ 40-50; Females/ 1 under 5; 3 @ 5-10; 1 @ 10-15; 1 @ 20-30; 1 @ 40-50.
It was probably at this time that he moved his family again. When the 1850 census was taken, Jesse, age 56 years, and daughters Sarah, age 16, and Kesiah, age 14 were in Limestone Co., Ala. It is not known why he moved to Alabama - or when he moved back to Tennessee. His cousin, Henry Wheeler, moved along with him.
He was not listed with Sarah on the 1880 census so it is presumed he had died by that time.
It was said he had a son "M.D." This is not correct. The "M.D." Wheeler shown on the 1860 census in Bedford Co., Tennessee, living next to Jesse and Wiley Wheeler, sons of Jesse & Sarah O. Wheeler is actually W.D. Wheeler. In the household with "M.D." Wheeler is M.M. Wheeler, age 23; J.B. Wheeler, age 15; and R.T. Wheeler, age 10. W.D. (William D.) Wheeler and the others were shown on the 1850 census of Bedford County as the children of John W. and Edaline Wheeler. John W. Wheeler was living next to Thomas and Martha Wheeler of SC in 1850. It is not known why "M.D." Wheeler was living next door to Jesse's children.

Jesse married 1 Sarah "Sallie" Oslin daughter of Samuel Oslin and Martha Bugg on 3 Aug 1813 in Granville Co., North Carolina. Sarah was born 2 about 1800 in North Carolina. She died before 1850 in probably Bedford Co., Tennessee.

They had the following children:

266FixKesiah Ann Wheeler 1 was born about 1837 in Bedford Co., Tennessee. She died in .
Kesiah married Rowland Cook Green son of Asa Green and Priscilla Wheeler on 15 Feb 1861 in Limestone Co., Alabama. Rowland was born 1, 2 about 1810 in Granville Co., North Carolina. He died in 1860/1870 in Limestone Co., Alabama. Rowland was counted in a census in 1840 in Lawrence Co., Tennessee. He was counted in a census in 1850 in Lawrence Co., Tennessee. He was counted in a census 3 in 1860 in Limestone Co., Alabama.

There was a 70 year old Robert Cook, pauper, place of birth "unknown" in his household in 1850.

267FxEady Augustine Wheeler 1 was born 2 before 1840 in Bedford Co., Tennessee.
