He migrated with is family to Bedford County, TN around 1830. He is counted in a census with is family 1820, 1830 Granville County NC. He is counted in a census 1840 Bedford, County TN. He is counted in census 1860 Bedford County TN, 1870 Pope County Ill.
George Washington Wheeler Sr. marries for the first time November 2, 1842 to Almerim Caroline Atkinson born Feb 20 1828 died June 16, 1850. As of the date of this writing we have not discovered the legal marriage document. However we have a family bible record that is quite clear on this marriage, the children of it and the deaths.
It's important to note that on the 1870 census we learn that neither George Washington Wheeler Sr. nor Sarah Jane Hooper (his 3rd wife) are able to read or write which was common in those days. However all their future generations learn to both read and write. So these bible records must have been recorded by several of their children.
This bible was passed down by the Family of Robert Clury Wheeler (my great uncle). I came upon it on ancestry.com and by starting a written friendship and colaboration from his decendant my distant cousin John Wheeler. We have colaborated on much of the information found about this family during the time frame of 1820's thru the civil war. The original bible below resides in museum in Indiana (severalWheeler decendants of Southern Ill migrated onto Indiana the next state over including my distant cousin John's family)

After the death of George Srs' first wife in June of 1850, George leaves his only surviving child of this marriage, James Gideon Wheeler, in the care of his brother James T Wheeler born 1824 and sister in law Nancy Alexander at their home in Limestone County Alabama. We have the 1850 census record which proves this. At this time the Wheeler family were all living in Limestone County Alabama. Not sure exactly what year they moved here from Bedford TN but it was after the 1840 census as Jesse Wheeler and Sarah Oslin and their children (including George W Sr.) are living in Bedford TN. By the 1850 census we find Jesse Wheeler and Sarah Oslin living in Limstone Co. Alabama. Then by 1860 George Sr. is living back in Bedford County TN. for only a short time as around 1862-63 he has moved his family to Pope County Ill to escape the war.
James Wheeler is listed here with his uncle and aunt James T Wheeler and Nancy. (beginning 2nd line from top)1850 Limestone County Alabama
George marries a second time almost exactly a year from the date he is widowed. June 26 1851 he marries his father's long time neighbor 21 year old Martha Alvira Kennemur (Cannamore on census records) born Feb 12, 1830 (see above bible record).
Above is the official Marriage License for George Wheeler and Martha Alvira Kennemore. It is on the right side at the bottom. They are married in Limestone County Alabama. Children of George Wheeler Sr. and Martha Alvira Kennemore.Sadly George's second marriage also leaves him a widow. Martha dies on August 17, 1857 shortly after giving birth to their third child. Martha Jane Wheeler born June 26 1857, dies only a few weeks after her mother on September 3, 1857. One can only guess that both deaths are caused by either complications related to child birth or a disease of the times.William Washington WheelerDavid Franklin (Frank) WheelerMartha Jane WheelerGeorge Wheeler Sr. and Sarah Jane Hooper
After the death of George Srs' second wife in June of 1857, George is left with three small boys to raise. James Gideon Wheeler from his first marriage; William "Billy" and David Franklin "Frank" from his second marriage. At this point we haven't seen George on a census record yet by himself. Unsure where he was on the 1850 census which was taken in late December of that year. However, he marries another neighbor girl on October 13 1859 George marries Sarah Jane Hooper born February 12 1841 Rover, Bedford TN.
1860 Census - unknown why Billy and Frank are not listed on this census, it is possible they are visiting family. However James Gideon is listed here. Children of George Washington Wheeler Sr and Sarah Jane Hooper:Elijah Benjamin WheelerMinerva Ann WheelerRobert Lee WheelerJohn Henry Wheeler
We also know from the same letter above that John Henry dies from being kicked in the stomach by a horse.
